Firstly, I'd like to thank Kevin James of Margate,Kent for his suggestion of the blog title 'Eff Off To Kay - Folkestone Off To Kilimanjaro', the man is a genius!
Secondly, a bit of background to this blog -
In October 2010 whilst trawling Facebook, as I have been known to do, 'cough cough', I noticed a video on a friends page regarding her recent trip to Africa where she had climbed Kilimanjaro. I watched the video and just thought ' I want to do that!'. I'd previously seen photos from her trip but the video with the music and the beautiful sunrise really brought it home as to how amazing the whole experience was. A local radio station, KMFM, had been heavily promoting trips to Kilimanjaro the previous year but at that time I smoked heavily and knew it would be a ridiculous thing for me to do. However, I gave up smoking in May this year and now feel that I can and will do it! I then decided to sound out a few Facebook friends to see if anybody else would want to do the 'mountain climbing thaaang' and received several replies expressing interest.
Today, Thursday 28th October 2010, I created a Facebook group called = 'Folkestone to Kilimanjaro (F2K) 2010 - 2011 and at the present time has 16 members.
I've been doing some research and have decided that the Marangu Route is the way to go due to the fact that sleeping is done in huts rather than tents.
Why have a bad nights sleep slumming it in a tent when you can get a good nights sleep and be ready and fit to climb the next day sleeping on a mattress in a hut?
I'm also going to arrange a sponsored walk up and down the Zig Zag path in Folkestone, the perfect training route for Kilimanjaro and also some walks up the hills around Folkestone. The Santa Fun Run may also be a good place to fundraise once I know how many people are still interested.
I'm now waiting for Caroline, my inspiration, to return from her two week holiday in Oz and will then be arranging a get together for all interested members to see if they still want to proceed. Another friend will be asking a couple of people she knows who have also done the climb if they will come along to chat to people as well. We need to know everything warts and all!!!
From there we'll see who is still interested and start to research who we should travel with, there are literally hundreds of companies so a lot of research is needed.
It's going to be brilliant!!!!
You need to put the follow gadget on here so we can follow the blog... :)
